Residents, staff, volunteers and the founders at Woodhaven Senior
Community strive to be a family-focused organization. Our mission is to
provide quality housing and supportive services in a serene, natural
setting. We demonstrate this by, (1) preserving the dignity of
residents, staff and volunteers, (2) addressing physical, spiritual,
social and emotional needs of our residents, and (3) fostering the best
possible care for our residents and their wellness by encouraging
fullness of life.

The story of how the concept of Woodhaven
Senior Community came to be is an interesting one. David Dixner’s
father, J. Kenneth Dixner (Ken), owner of 136 apartments in Lapeer,
noticed many years ago how often residents ages 80-88 loved to gather
and socialize. He noticed a need for fellowship and senior type
activities. Friend’s of Ken’s, Chuck and Gail Mandeville, sold their
nursing home in Fenton and partnered with the Dixner family to buy land
in Flint Township, known today as Woodhaven Senior Community. The first
phase was built in 1989 on a picturesque 40-acre woodland campus. Soon,
the doors opened to Genesee County’s first independent 55 and older
senior residential community. This type of senior residential community
living had long been popular in one-climate areas such as Arizona and
Florida, and the Dixner family thought it might work in Genesee County.
Shortly thereafter, J. Kenneth Dixner
bought Mandeville's interest in the business and he became the general
partner and co-owner. Phase one was completed, with seventy-three one
and two bedroom rental apartments, three daily meals, housekeeping, 24
hour security and other activities in a congregate setting. During this
time, thirty individual, spacious 1500 square foot, two bedrooms, two
bath villas complete with attached garages, for independent seniors to
reside were being planned.
In 1995, David and his brother Phillip
joined the family business. Soon, phase three was completed, 30
additional villas; however, at that time a growing need for barrier-free
apartments was in high demand. Commencing in 1998, the Dixner family
built a newly designed fifty, one and two bedroom building to meet all
of their current and new residents’ needs. Also unique to the campus was
the ability to have an on-site 24 hour independent home health care
agency to satisfy all of the residents’ daily needs.
In 2009 David took over the executive
director position from his father. In 2015, the newest expansion, the
Woodlands, was started, and today it includes a state of the art 12,000
square foot clubhouse that includes the Woodhaven Grille and Pub,
library, administrative offices, a fully equipped Wellness center, as
well as a 4000 square foot aquatic center that includes a pool, jacuzzi
and dry sauna. The Clubhouse is surrounded by 28 new clubhomes. Each
ranch-style clubhome features: 1,600 square feet of living space, two
bedrooms and two baths, a two car garage, a fully equipped kitchen,
abundant walk-in closet space, laundry room, private screened in patio,
a large bay window in the dining area and 9 foot ceilings. Additional
plans for expansion are in the works!
